This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government. A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life. "Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed. The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics. Details of the New Electoral Partnership According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed. Broader Government Discussions Underway In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising. Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
